The Costa Rican Chamber of Information and Communication Technologies (Camtic) is a private, non-for-profit business association established in 1998. It was created in order to form a strategic block that would allow to strengthen and support the information and communication technologies (ICT) sector. Since Camtic begun its activities representing only the Costa Rican software sector (History), today it groups over 90% of the software national enterprises.
Due to the very recent expansion of Camtic in favor of the rest of ICT sector, new companies from the other ICT segments ( ICT areas ) are starting to incorporate themselves as members. The organization is the only one of its kind in Central America .
Today, Camtic occupies the Executive Vice Presidency of the Latin American Association of Information Technologies' Entities (ALETI) of which is a founding member. Moreover it is a active member of the International Federation of Multimedia Associations (IFMA) and part of the World Information Technology and Services Alliance (WITSA).
History
The Chamber of Software Producers of Costa Rica (Caprosoft) was created in 1998 by fifteen founding member software firms who foresaw Costa Rica 's potential to become an important international provider of information systems.
Thanks to this vision, in 1999 Caprosoft was able to obtain the first technical cooperation project to increase the competitiveness of a sector software granted by the Inter American Development Bank (IADB) through its Multilateral Investment Fund (MIF). Through this cooperation, the Support Program for the Costa Rican Software Sector ( Prosoftware ) was created as a a non-refundable loan managed with participation of the Commerce Promoter of Costa Rica (PROCOMER), the National Center of High Technology (CENAT) and Camtic. Together, this cooperation amounted to a total monetary and a non-monetary support of US$2.5 million.
Caprosoft's clear direction and member support quickly made the Chamber one of the most dynamic business associations in Costa Rica . Caprosoft has successfully supported the growth and development of the country's software sector and continuous to generate a positive impact among its members and on the national economy.
In 2003 Caprosoft developed an intense strategic planning process which resulted in a broad national vision for creating a solid ICT cluster. The planning process and vision design took more than a year to construct and yielded the Information and Communication Technology National Strategy which was named " Costa Rica : Green & Smart"® ( National ICT Strategy ).
Rapid technological changes; changing business models; the growing convergence between informatics, services, and communications; and the need to create a common path for the ICT sector motivated Caprosoft to broaden the scope of the business association and begin incorporating other ICT stakeholders. In June, 2004, Caprosoft - with the support of the Ministry of Science and Technology (MICIT) and the Ministry of Foreign Trade (COMEX)- launched " Costa Rica : Green & Smart"®. In that same event, Caprosoft made official its expansion and growth process by becoming the Costa Rican Chamber of Information and Communication Technologies (Camtic).
Presently, Camtic is the most representative technology association in Central America . The principal task of the association today is the execution of the national ICT strategy.
